Fatih

Fatih, the most famous European neighborhood in Istanbul that allows its visitors to live in the ancient periods of history and enjoy the greatness of the Ottoman civilization, which spans nearly 850 years. Visitors will see this neighborhood engraved on the houses of the old city and its Ottoman mosques. In the corners of this neighborhood, visitors also evoke the march of the Islamic conquest of historical Istanbul in its ancient alleys and neighborhoods. For such reasons, the neighborhood has become a spiritual center for citizens and tourists.

Today, Fatih is considered a stronghold of the Arab trade and community. Many members of these communities prefer to settle in an atmosphere full of spirituality. Likewise, Fatih has distinct tourist centers; as the neighborhood is located in the city center and its proximity to the most prominent tourist and historical places and famous markets.

The neighborhood was named Fatih, after the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II or Mehmed the Conqueror, who managed to conquer Istanbul in 1453AD and ordered the reconstruction of its walls, colleges, Fatih Mosque, and the construction of the first university in Ottoman history. The most important aspect that distinguishes this area is its Fatih Mosque, which is located on a high hill seen from many parts of the city.

Where do I Go?

Water surrounds Fatih on three sides; namely, the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus Strait; the fourth side, however, is surrounded by the walls of Istanbul. Many unique places in Fatih must be visited, among these are:

  • The Egyptian Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı): This bazaar was named by such a name because most of its Turkish merchants used to go to Egypt to purchase merchandise; especially, grains, coffee, and spices. The bazaar is one of the largest markets in the city and is located opposite the port of Eminönü. Upon entering this bazaar, visitors will find a stone floor, ornate domes, and historical walls mixed with Ottoman products, colorful lamps, and unparalleled architectural masterpieces.
  • Grand Bazaar (The Covered Market): This bazaar is located in Beyazıt and is a closed market and a large, pleasant maze. The bazaar is a mosaic museum of cultural and historical value not seen in the entire republic.
  • Historia Mall: One of the most famous shopping centers in the city, which attracts all people. The center is characterized by a modern design, with an exquisite water fountain at its entrance, which enchants its visitors; especially, when the water rises from inside it to create a wonderful environment. The mall consists of 6 floors offering all kinds of services and goods, and the most famous Eastern and Western traditional foods.
  • Hırka - i Şerif Cami: This mosque gained its name because it preserves the mantle of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, which was brought by Selim I (Yavuz Sultan Selim), the 9th sultan of the Ottoman Empire, in 1516AD to Istanbul, and was kept there. Hundreds of thousands of tourists and citizens flock to this mosque in the month of Ramadan every year to visit and see the mantle of the Prophet, in a scene that has become one of the most prominent Ramadan rituals for Muslims in general.

The neighborhood and its mosque are located on the city's hills and witnessed many civilizations and three empires of history and architecture. The neighborhood has become a center for many cultures and religions; as it houses historical columns such as the Serpents Column, Meshabbak Column, the Pharaonic Obelisk, and the famous mosque, which started construction in 1609AD, during the era of Sultan Ahmed I.
  • Ayasofya Mosque and Museum: The Ayasofya Mosque and Museum are considered among the most important places of world heritage. Located opposite the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Ayasofya mosque was first built as a church and was turned into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul in 1453AD until 1935AD; then, it was turned into a museum built of stone and brick. The history of the mosque dates back to 537AD and many consider it the eighth wonder of the world.
